Situated on The Main, Schwartz’s is one of Montreal’s biggest personalities. This business has provided quality meals and service since 1928 and home is to some of the best smoked meat in North America. Reuben Schwartz, who immigrated from Romania and is the original owner, began the worldwide legend of Schwartz’s during the Depression. After Montreal hosted the 1976 Olympics, business exploded in popularity.
Word of mouth and the Internet allowed Schwartz-mania to spread to all corners of the globe. Known to host locals, tourists and celebrities all at the same table, Schwartz’s helps strangers to become friends by passing the ketchup. The dining area bursts with cultural diversity and the excitement of customers getting into a frenzy for the classic smoked meat sandwich. This deli’s role as Montreal’s own celebrity puts the city on the map in yet another area of expertise.
I just wanted to say that I loved the meat sandwich I had. It was definately worth the drive from Toronto!!! We drove to Montreal just to have a bite of Schwartz's Famous Smoked Meat! If you haven't had one you should definately go to Schwartz's. I moved back to the states a lil over 2 years ago and still wish I could have another.
Schwartz’s is a Montreal institution, and smoked meat is gourmet to Montrealers. Located on Saint-Laurent Boul, this deli specializes in smoked meat and serves up some of the city’s best. Whether you’re getting a sandwich or plate, you have to enjoy your smoked meat with a sour pickle, cherry cola and fries. Patrons line up just to get a coveted seat in this small establishment. Schwartz’s is open until 12:30 am from Sunday to Thursday, until 1:30 am on Friday, and until 2:30 am on Saturday.
In business since 1928, this smoked meat pioneer is a Montreal landmark and Canada’s oldest deli. Let the permanent, inescapable lineup in front be the judge!
Another great Montreal classic that is great for lunch. While it’s true that line-ups are long, it’s sometimes fun to play tourist in your own city and chat with visitors when the reward is a delicious half fat smoked meat sandwich with a side of pickles. For a quicker service, head for the pick-up line.
