I discovered this hidden gem when I moved to the Peterborough County 5 yrs ago and have been dining @ Matsu Sushi on Park St once a month on average. I love Sushi & previously lived in Toronto where there are over 500 sushi restaurants, so I'm happy to have found Matsu Sushi. Everything they serve is always fresh! They use top quality sushi rice that's consistently cooked perfectly... not too soft nor too hard. Every tempura is scrumptious with just the right amount of batter & so skillfully deep fried at the right temperature. Here is where I've tasted the best miso soup... always just right, nothing too powerful. Their bento box lunches & dinners are great buys with fresh, crispy salad, a scoop of rice, an extra dish added to your main course plus the miso soup & free appetizer. At the end of your meal they give you an orange that is always nicely cut & presented. Matsu Sushi on Park St is always clean & bright. I love the simple decor - pine wood cubicles with cotton panels printed with Geisha image. The owners welcome every customer warmly & sincerely as they also thank you & bid you goodbye when you leave. As a sushi connoiseur, I try every sushi place I find in the area but none in Peterborough has equaled Matsu Sushi on Park St for scrumptious, fresh sushi.
Matsu is unmatched. I don't get how you could prefer the dingy atmosphere at hoshi or the park st location to Matsu. There's no comparison. The food at park st. is also noticibly sloppier. The rice here is always fresh, fish is always at a good temperature, and there are nice little variations on the menu from time to time to keep things interesting. The atmosphere in east city is fantastic. It's fresh and light, I love being greeted by Mr. Kim, the music is nice, it's cozy, the plates are really interesting. It's the yardstick experience for any other restaurant to match.
Worst Experience. When ordering my meal I pointed to an appetizer and said I would like this served as my main meal (in hopes it would come at the same time as my boyfriends) because I wasn't very hungry. Apparently ordering it so it will come later costs more money because they charged us an extra $6.00. Their excuse was that they misunderstood us and that it was our fault for not knowing it was too big of a portion. This would make sense if we had eaten there before, or maybe any korean restaurant, but regardless they were at fault and could of had at least apologized or charged us for the meal intended. After disguising it with the waiter and owner they told us to sit down and wait for an answer, but they never returned. We went up to pay for our overcharged bill and we waited 10 minutes for someone to give us service so we could leave. Overall the food wasn't very good, service was very poor (very bad communication on the restaurants side), and I found that they should of shown more respect to customers. Thanks for listening.
Good food, nice place I do however feel a bit embarassed by the loud greeting you get when you come in and when you leave. We are after all Canadians!! My husband won't even go back due to this. Lucky for me my friends will.
Quite frankly i find the owner yelling at you every-time annoying, I used to go there quite often but i am just annoyed at how I am yelled at every-time I enter and every-time I leave. The sushi is fresh and good, but the maki rolls, would not be the best in town, Hoshi's sushi plates are much more professional and beautiful and yummy. Matsu is also more expensive then other places around. The service is attentive for the most part. I would return is a friend wanted to go, but it would not be my first sushi pick in Peterborough
