Avoid this place! The red haired waitress seemed a little slow as she was confused by our order and brought us the wrong toast. The restaurant was dirty and grimy and we half expected to see roaches running around. The cook wasn't wearing a hair net and looked sketchy. The food was barely average and the price was outrageous. The Star Diner is an over-priced greasy spoon serving below average food. We won't be back.
My family started going here about a month ago for breakfast on Sunday mornings and absolutely love it!!! There is a wonderful homey feel that you get the minute you walk in the restaurant. It is the only place in Kingston we have found so far for breakfast that does not let your coffee cup go empty (a definite plus in our group). All of the servers are extremely nice, service is speedy, and the food is great. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a great homestyle place for breakfast.
I disagree with burrhead about the affectionate hon, dear, sweetie thing that the staff at the Star Diner like to do. I have been going there 1-3 times a week for years and they have done that since day 1, which is fine by me because I generally don't like my name being shouted out in public. In fact, I don't think the staff know my real name and they are discrete enough not to bug me about it. We have come to see Ida, Roxie, Annie, Bonnie and other regular staff there as our favourite friendly faces, always happy and sincere and genuinely committed to excellent food service as a career, not just a way to earn money and move on to something else. The fact that the ladies who work there onweekday mornings have done so for years is testimony to how well Ida runs the restaurant and how much we regulars like to come back and bring others with us. We tend to order these diner favourites: - grilled cheese - hot dog - western - omelette - the breakfast platter that has 4 kinds of meat - eggs and toast (or just toast) We love that they have rye bread as an option. We hear the fish and chips are great but that's not our flavour. The fries are EXCELLENT, esp. if you ask for them well done, which they are happy to do. I have been known to eat both breakfast and lunch there on the same day and the staff always get my beverage ready when they see me come through the door. The Star Diner feels like being served in a home kitchen by an attentive relative and whether I am there alone or with a friend or my own family member, I know all of the staff are going to smile and greet us and give us attentive but not invasive service. They remember our regular orders and they tease us gently if we change it up on them. I love that there are free newspapers at the Star for when I just want to chill out by myself for awhile. The booths and new padded chairs are comfy for a longer sit. The place always has other regulars in it and I would drive across town on the weekends to come here and know my food was going to be just as tasty as it is through the week. On rare occasions when I haven't had time to come in and sit, I have called ahead for takeout with all the fixings and it's ready in minutes. It's not the dirt-cheapest diner on the planet but it's good value for money and I have no problem tipping the staff well for their great service and consistently excellent food. Everything is clean and tasty and that is worth a dollar or two more than elswhere.
Love this restaurant!! The food is great, the service is super and the atmosphere homey and comfortable. The breakfast special is awesome!! Lots of food, good hot coffee, friendly staff and owner. What more could one want!
