In recent years, Wellington Street has emerged to become one of the main arteries of the city of Montreal. Very popular with South-West residents, the area’s many unique, gourmet restaurants also attract Montrealers from around the island. Here are some great places for those looking for a table within 10 minutes’ walk of the metro station De L'Église. [Image credit: iStockphoto.com/ Victor Kapas]
I've only sat down at this restaurant once, but I remember it like it was yesterday! The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with the aromas of good comfort food emanating from the kitchen. While chef Dara and sous-chef Jeremy are busy in the back, “BOSS” and “son” manage the floor and ensure the well-being of customers. And all do a great job! I ate the most delicious pork chop ever (tuna tataki is also a must at this spot) and I drank a little glass of perfectly paired, privately imported wine. Now it’s your turn to spoil yourself.
One of the now famous CULT MTL winners, Sweet Lee’s ranks second among the best bakeries and pastry shops in Montreal, just behind Guillaume and ahead of Hof Kelsten, Mamie Clafoutis and Première Moisson. And that’s saying something! You’ll find delicious gourmet sandwiches, pizza, scones, desserts and healthy snacks, plus a nice coffee or an iced tea. Dine in (there is even a small terrace) or take out.
The Palco is much more than a neighbourhood bar. This is a place that pushes the cultural talent in the region to the fore, thanks to a program of socio-cultural events. It’s also a place to go for a drink with friends, over barbecue chicken nachos and whiskey, shepherd’s pie with braised beef, a mini burger trio, beet carpaccio, or even a sweet potato poutine with roasted parsnips. A+ for the atmosphere... and the terrace in the summer!
By definition, a station is “a place where we stop on our way for a short or medium stop, where we take a break.” And W is for Wellington. So Station W is a small cafe on rue Wellington where you can stop for a snack (we love the grilled-cheese) and drink a cup of coffee to continue the day on the right foot. Everything is local and fresh, and breakfast is served every morning from 7 am.
From the same team that runs Wellington comes Balconville, a neighbourhood pub offering gourmet pub-style fare, with beer, cocktails, wine and... a beautiful terrace! We love the 1855 Black Angus steak burger with dark beer onion compote, aged cheddar and home-smoked bacon. Mmmmmm!
You go to Comptoir 21 for one sole dish: the Fish & Chips. The restaurant has a very pleasant little retro touch and the fish is always fresh and perfectly cooked. It goes with the large home fries and great coleslaw. In short, a safe and delicious bet!
