Le Vieux Velo on Beaubien is a good food eatery that is part of the new revival of Little Italy. Serving up all-day breakfasts instead of pizza and pasta, owner Kyra Foort says she and partner Marc Arseneault were answering the lack of week-long breakfast options. Brunch is such a classic Montreal meal, but it’s usually a formal, even three-course affair — something akin to fine dining. Kyra and Marc wanted to keep things simple. “Sometime people just want to have breakfast out,” says Kyra. “We serve breakfast and lunch options throughout the day and it’s very popular, especially with young professionals, business people, locals and the self-employed.”
Kyra and Marc came in from B.C. and opened in July 2010. They’d been working in a French restaurant in Victoria and wanted to start their own project here. “We had no idea what to expect when we started out — it felt like a bit of a gamble,” Kyra says. “We didn’t think of hiring any staff, Mark was in the kitchen and I worked up front. We expanded in 2011, after only a year open. It still felt like a risk opening that second half but it really helped the business progress,” she explains. “With a larger storefront, particularly the large window, people are more attracted and they’re more likely to try it when they know there’s more seats. It’s a balance between not wanting to seem empty and drawing people in because they know they’ll have a place to sit.”
