Sometimes the most interesting things in life can pass you by if you don’t look around and pay attention. This saying definitely goes for Gerrard Street East’s Indian Bazaar, which, if you pay close attention, you’ll find is home to so much more than veggie thalis and sari shops.
Take the Broken Leg Furniture Repair shop for instance. Walk just north of Gerrard on Rhodes Street and you will find a hand-painted sign strung with Christmas lights announcing Tom Hochmann’s shop. The entrance opens right into his main workspace, flooding your senses with the smell of sawdust and the sights of well-used workbenches, a myriad of tools and an array of antique chairs in various states of repair that line the wall like patients in a doctor’s waiting room.
