Meet the owner

When he graduated from medical school, Dr. Davindra Singh moved to Iroquois Falls where he spent the next eight years practicing family and emergency medicine. As one of few physicians in a small town, he performed a wide range of medical procedures, dealing with every conceivable form of illness and injury. While he learned a lot, he felt a great responsibility to the community. “It’s all on your head,” he explains, “you’re it.”

He’d moved to Iroquois Falls to open a family practice at the start of his career. Despite enjoying every aspect of life up north, Dr. Singh came back to Toronto to be closer to family. But his work was less varied, even in the ER, and he missed the ability to respond immediately to patients. Practicing in a small northern town allowed him the luxury of managing patients in an extremely efficient manner, something he found lacking in bigger city emergency rooms.

“If somebody came in with a fractured wrist in Iroquois Falls, I could get that fixed in 40 minutes…assess the break, X-ray, set it, X-ray again, its fine. In the city, the first X-ray takes three hours to come back. I didn’t want a career where I wasn’t being the doctor that I thought I could be,” he explains.

So Dr. Singh decided to pursue a new career path. Dermatology offered a good mix of everything he missed about small town medicine: the opportunity to heal serious diseases as well as treat more everyday ailments, the chance to perform surgery (“I love using my hands,” he notes), and the chance to run his own clinic, AvantDerm. Adding cosmetic procedures to the roster was an interesting challenge. As it turns out, where dermatology is concerned, the medical and the cosmetic sides are often closely related.

    These people really have their skin in the game- bad pun but, they helped my daughter when other Drs could not. long wait but worth it at the walk in.
