First Link® is a referral program designed to help newly diagnosed people with dementia get the help they need as soon as possible.
The Alzheimer Society provides services and support at the time of diagnosis and throughout the duration of the disease. Individuals and their care-partners are linked to education and support services as early as possible.
First Link® helps to assist physicians and other community health service providers to connect people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias to the Alzheimer Society.First Steps: This series aims to help individuals newly diagnosed with dementia and their care-partners understand the diagnosis recently obtained and discuss changes they may be experiencing as a result. This series offers participants an opportunity to share and connect with others on a similar journey. They will learn about dementia and its relation to memory loss and other cognitive changes. Participants will also learn coping strategies with regards to challenges presented as dementia progresses. We will explore the different drugs treatments available in Canada, ongoing research and best practices while planning for the future. We also explore community resources and local support agencies that are available to help.
