The Canadian Centre for Diversity (CCD) was founded in 1947 as Canadian Council of Christians and Jews (CCCJ) to promote racial and religious harmony. Eminent Canadians such as Lady Flora McCrae Eaton of the Eaton department stores family and newspaper tycoon Lord Thomson of Fleet were aware of the horrors brought on by prejudice and discrimination in war-ravaged Europe and vowed to work hard to ensure that Canada would become a land where all would feel welcome, whatever their race, religion or ethnic origin.
