This classic setting overlooking the river and waterwheel complements the casual, fine dining perfectly. The patio has a great view and a casual menu. Inside the cozy fireplace is very romantic or you can get a very private dining room for business or family events. Food was excellent with good variety and local flavours. Definitely worth the short country drive for a complete night out experience. Not nearly as expensive as I thought.
We made last minute reservations, literally ... and for 9, they were accomodating. As it turned out we had a small room to ourselves, and good thing we can be rowdy. The server was a bit slow getting drinks and getting them all at the same time. Appetizers were brought out timely, dinner items too, and everyone commented on how good our meals were presented and cooked. Overall it was a good evening out, the only issue was billing at the end of the dinner, took a bit too long, but it was a combination of the Waterlot and us, Great place to visit for it's history too. Will be back soon !
We have been here before and the food is alright, yet nothing special. The place seems a little worn, in need of renovations. The wait staff was okay except the kid that was helping was awful, very forgetful. Seemed he did not want to be there. I would not rush back yet I would go if others insisted
We visited the Waterlot with friends because it was between Stratford and Kitchener and on the way home from a matinee performace. The waiter and other table staff were pleasant and helpful and the food was good so really no complaints in that regard and that is an important part of what you want. A couple of us has the all inclusive type menu which was very fair value and gave you a couple of different choices for app, entree and dessert. One person had two app's instead of an entree which was a salad and a scallop dish which they enjoyed. The food had flavour and were reasonable portions. The menu was European influence and pretty traditional - not much added flair. Very limited wine menu but the prices were reasonable and the wines recognisable. We had made reservations over a week in advance. It was a Saturday night and an early seating. The place was not busy and they sat us in a back room that was just plain ugly and unpleasant and looked like some old addition. The rest of the restaurant and facilities seemed like it needed an refresh from what we saw. We were looking forward to a nice evening and felt that it was spoiled sitting in a rather dumpy room which did not make us linger.
With every bite you will chew slower and slower. I didn't even want to swallow the food it was so good. I unexpectedly spent $400 because I just wanted to sample more and more.
I was not real impressed with this place. I thought the food was just okay and the service was very bad from our waitress. Twice I had to ask another waitress for more drinks. The atmosphere was just okay. I know the building is old but it does not seem like they maintain anything. The landscape is way over grown and needs replaced. Not what I expected from a finer restaraunt.
This restaurant has quickly become our absolute favorite for a fine dining experience. On our last visit we brought our parents. We all had supremely wonderful dishes. From our array of delicious starters, to our main dishes (pork, lamb, scallops, chicken) we were all eagerly sampling each others plates. The staff is unpretentious, which is somewhat surprising considering the menu. It truly is a pleasure to dine there. The staff actually remember you! We love the fresh bread, and the sorbet in the little ice cream cones to cleanse your palate between courses. Only once have i been let down by a dish there, and it was only because I don't enjoy amaretto, and it was ordered for me. I highly recommend this place for an anniversary or special evening out. Worth noting- this family run business closes the month of March.
All of my experiences at this restaurant have been amazing. The dinners are created with local produce and meats and poultry, the servers are attentive without being annoying and the dishes are fantastic. Although the decor is somewhat excessive (the knick-knacks) and outdated, the view of the Nith is beautiful, and makes for a special dining experience. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is celebrating something special.
