It was an awful experience and expensive for what they served, I felt like it was food from a cafeteria. I would not recommend this place at all. Waste of money they should not call themselve "Mexican restaurant" that was not mexican at all, I ordered a pulled chicken it was so dry that I had to ask them for some sour cream.I should have taking a picture of what was on my plate, service was bad and not enough waitress. I would never go back there again.
I've been here multiple times, and I'll admit, the service is not the best I've received. Somedays the owner (who is an old Mexican lady) is extremely thoughtful and talks with us, other times I've been, she's been cold, and barely talks. However, if you want to have a great meal in a small, not usually crowded place, La Cantina is perfect. The food is not too expensive and tastes great. The best guacamole I've ever had!
Fantastic authentic mexican morsels...decided to order tapas style...trying a little of everything accompanied by tasty quenching sangria. House perogies, crispy outside but still soft and moist stuffed with juicy chorizo, fresh tomatillo sauce and salsa...followed by corn tamales also moist and flavorful...next came beef empanadas with the most sensational secret saucy pickled condiment which could easily be marketed and sold...mid meal the decision was made for another round of the perogies because they were so extremely good...another glass of sangra (had a 1/2 pitcher)...tried cactus with tortillas which was my first cactus tasting and certainly will not be the last and is now my new favorite vegetable...and then a melted cheezy with crumbled chorizo dish that is beyond a cheese lovers dream which you also wrap in tortilla...and for dessert was the last round of house special chorizo perogies...skip the mexican fast food places, take the time to sit and savour at this somewhat dated but absolutely hospitable and comfortable spot in streetsville. The woman who catered to our needs and satiated our appetites was like a Nana/Nona? Grandma, whose company and service I enjoyed so much I wanted to hug her as I left. My new casual unassuming full of flavour and made with heart and passion place...i dare you to try the plates like tapas, sharing with your partner over a glass (or half pitcher) of sangria. Parking was also really easy at the side of the building, and free. If you are a foodie who does not want the packaged mexican drive thru experience, then this is the spot for you.
The worst Mexican food ever. My wife and I entered last night to the sound of the owner barking at us at from within the bar area "there are no tables outside only inside!" Not even a "hello, welcome" to greet us. A grumpy old lady who seems to be in a bad mood and here we are wondering what are we doing here. The most rude and inconsiderate experience we have ever had. It was my wife's birthday and she asked me for Mexican food so I Googled the nearest location. What a mistake as it spoiled the whole Birthday event. My wife is Mexican and I have to admit, my wife cooks better Mexican food than this establishment. Aside from the poor overall service and attitude from the owner, the food was overpriced for what you got, VERY SMALL PORTIONS. Poor taste for the Tinga (pork) and NO TORTILLA with the meal!? Any pure Mexican restaurant will always serve tortilla with any main dish. I am surprised you are in business and I predict you will close down in the near future.
Last week accompanied my wife to this establishment to celebrate her birthday. We had a great time! Our server was so nice. The guacamole was fresh and delicious. My wife had the mole and I had enchiladas which were huge portions. The server over heard us talking about how it was my wife's b-day and brought out a fried ice-cream with a candle on it which was very nice. Our guests had a wonderful time. We plan to have our staff holiday party at Cantina this December!

You may fool the Gringos Cantina Mexicana, but you will not fool Latinos with your tastless food and the worst restaurant service I have ever seen in my life. I am surprised you are in business and I predict you will close down in the near future.
Terrible - will not go back to this place again. Skimpy portion size, when asked for more condiments for the fajitas the older lady in charge scowled at us. Miserable staff - we were sitting outside and the umbrella fell onto our table, it took the old lady almost 5 minutes to come and see us and then a further 10 minutes to actually apologize..... Save your money and go anywhere else.
It was absolutely terrible, the food was bland, not at all Mexican - no spices, soup was like Campbells chicken and rice, the only thing that was tasty was the warmed tortia chips and the salsa was tasty after that it was totally down hill. Possibly one of the worst ever meals I have had in Streetsville, it was overpriced in our minds in large part because it was tasteless. We will not go back, would never recommend it to anyone. How this restaurant survives is anyone's guess. Don't waste your money.
I went to Cantina on Friday for a big party. It was amazing! The server was so nice. A few people had allergies and our server knew exactly what those people could eat so she made a few recommendations. She brought a few hot salsas for us to try which were so yummy. At the end the owner came to our table and thanked us for bringing in our group and gave us some free shirts and corona necklaces. We had a great time and I want to go there for my birthday!
I have NEVER encountered such horrendous customer sevice and attitude as I did from the crabby, miserable old lady that owns this restaurant. I don't even know why she is in this industry if she despises waiting on customers so much and I'm surprised that this restaurant is still in business. Here's the scenario folks, imagine being seated and ordering your favorite pitcher of beer and then a few minutes later having this old lady come back and tell you in a VERY confrontational way that "WE DON'T HAVE THAT BEER ON TAP, OKAY!" I mean really? Who does that?! That should have been our first indication of what was to come. We placed our orders and forgot to mention that we wanted to split our bills, so when she came back with some of our appetizers I requested our bills to be separated. Surprise, surprise!!! The old lady says "Okay, you should have told me in the beginning that you wanted separate bills but I'll go ahead and separate it! " Gee, thanks for doing us this extraordinary favour of separating our checks! It felt like it was the biggest inconvenience ever for her to do that and the bill hadn't even been printed yet?! We made a few other small requests in which we were made to feel like we were inconveniencing her further and then near the end of our meal she suddenly became SLIGHTLY pleasant. I guess she was hoping to get a tip, which she did NOT receive. In hindsight, we should have just cancelled our main courses ordered, finished our appetizers and drinks and left. The food was good, but our dining experience was COMPLETELY ruined by the quality of customer service we received. Needless to say none of the people in my party will ever recommend or go back to this restaurant.
I've been going to this restaurant for awhile and its always great. My family and I went recently for my dad's birthday. We had a great time and I didn't even tell the waitress it was my dad's birthday but I guess she over heard and brought a little something for my dad. The owners special and one of their large Margaritas are a must!
Wandering through Streetsville we happened upon Cantina Mexicana. We had been feeling like some Mexican food for awhile so decided to give this place a try. The inside is fairly small. We were here on a Sunday afternoon so it was not busy. There were only 2 other tables with diners. We were seated right away. I don't eat a lot of Mexican food, so I asked the waitress what she would recommend. She was very friendly and made several recommendations including the enchiladas, which my wife and I both decided to ordered along with an appetiser of guacamole. The food was all very fresh and tasty. Our waitress was friendly and the service was timely. I liked this place well enough, and would definitely consider coming again. The one drawback that might prevent my return is I get very turned off when pop is not free to get refills and this is indeed the case here. A glass of pop was $2 and there were no free refills.
If the woman owner was not there, then this restaurant could potentially be great. You could get very lucky like some others here and have a good time. However the chances are not good. Especially if you are a visible minority, then don't bother to go there. Be prepared to wait a VERY long time for service unless you're lucky, and don't dare call for service. Under no circumstances should you get the attention of the Lady of the House, or you will make a bad situation much worse. The food is good, although the portions are small for the price.
My friends and I felt compelled to register to write this review. We went on a Sat. around 2-3 so we were the only customers. It was great, we had the whole place to ourselves. The restaurant's interior was well decorated to suit the Mexican theme. The drinks were 3 Cola's and a interesting Mexican pop called Sangria which tasted like a Cuba Librai (rum and coke). We all split the meal 4 ways and it was the perfect amount with desserts. First we ordered the guacamole tortilla dip with salsa as an appetizer. It was excellent. For the main course we shared the Zapata Fiesta which consisted of a superb selection if Mexican foods. There wasn't anything non of use didn't like. For dessert we split 2 sides (6) of Choros Barrches. They taste like beaver tales. Which are 4inch, log shaped, deep fried batter covered with cinnamon and sugar. You felt like you could eat another serving to your face. The last thing was the deep fried ice-cream... it was like a deep-fried tennis-ball size mccain coconut cream pie. It was the cherry topping off the whole meal. The waiter who we assume to be to owner as well was kind and direct with our order. This was nice for a change and exactly what we wanted. We paid around $92 not including our generous tip. Which we felt worthy for the perfect amount of Delicious food and nice atmosphere even on a rainy day. We can't wait to eat at the Cantana Mexicana again. We Recommend it and encourage any Mexican food lover to try it out. It is well worth the half hour drive.
Have only been there twice. The first time we really enjoyed it and the second time was on December 29th with a couple friends that were visiting from out of town. One of our friends lived in Colombia for 2 years and the other in Guadalajara. Both of these guys loved the food here. They had a lot of conversation in Spanish with the owner and I picked up on some of the rudeness/attitude that others have mentioned from her. Outside of that, the food was great the first time and just as good the next. If you can tolerate the nuances of eating at a privately owned restaurant then this is a great Mexican place to eat!
I stumbled to Cantina Mexicana by accident last night while looking for a place to eat with my friend and girlfriend. We were going to go to a restaurant further up queen street but turns out it was closed. Decided to drive down Streetsville and see what was offered there. We were just about out of streetsville when my friend pointed out Cantina. I've never really had Mexican food in Canada and I have been wanting to have some for quite some time. We decided to go in and try it out. From the outside and inside it has the feel of a small restaurant because it is. At first I was thinking it'd maybe be a little weird, but the whole atmosphere works well later on once I sat down for a little bit. My girlfriend likes the look of the restaurant from the inside saying its nice even if it is a rather smaller place. We were greeted by the older lady which is the owner of the restaurant. She came by to take our order, but we've never really had Mexican food so we had questions to ask. She was very happy to answer whatever questions we had and after we asked for a suggestion and recommendation for the 3 of us. She suggested the Zapata's Feast and maybe an appetizer as to make sure we're full since it might not be enough for 3 people she suggested. She then suggested the Guacamole Dip which we got. The Zapata's Feast contained a bit of everything: a burrito, a quesadilla, a chimichanga and enchalada. Also came with a bit of rice, beans and salad. This was a great suggestion as the food was very tasty. We all got to try a little bit of everything which allows us to know what it is we like. This will allow for easier ordering next time. I really enjoyed the chimichanga as I've never had one before and pleasantly surprised by the taste of it. My friend liked the quesadilla best and my girlfriend likes the guacamole dip best (shes a big fan of avacado). The whole experience was very good. The lady came to talk to us occasionally to ask about how the food was, told us a little bit about the restaurant and there was some other small talk too, which was nice. She was extremely friendly to us and I have no idea why others would say she was rude. We came to this restaurant at 9pm, 1hr before closing time on a Thursday and there were 2 other groups inside. The food came fast and overall a good eating experience.
Good Mexican food. It's difficult to find a good Mexican restaurant. The food here was tasty and seemed fresh with nice flavour. My only problem was that I didn't like the salsa that came with the chips -- it tasted off. Otherwise, everything was great. I was a bit worried about going here because of the previous reviews about bad service, but the younger woman that served us was incredibly polite and attentive. Our food was fast (I don't mind a slower pace), but the restaurant was empty. As we were finishing, the place started to fill up and they had a large reservation come in. I thought it was cozy and clean and would go again for more Mexican food.
I had a bunch of friends go for their Tequila night. It was amazing. We had some great fajitas, enchiladas, and quesadillas. We got to sample a lot of different tequilas. I felt bad though because 2 very rude mexican woman left with out paying their bill. They only had a drink and one appetizer and were just trying to drink free tequila. Another woman that was with them said she is the representative for Acapulco and she said she just met them there. I think she was lieing so she didn't have to pay for their food. I thought it was so bad that the owners have to deal with people like that. The servers were so nice and helpful. I hope to be bad soon.
This place was so tasty. You can tell its home cooked recipies. The serving staff was friendly and my favorite was the home made nachos a salsa. They even make tamales there too! I will be back for sure and plan to bring my parents.
The food was so fresh. The nachos they make themselfs and the avacodo dip too. The young girls serving were very helpful and explained things to us. We really had a great time there. I am even thinking of having my 40th birthday there and inviting 30 people to enjoy the food with me!
