As the owner of Toronto’s premier car seat installation service, Mohammad Bhorat is used to getting last-minute phone calls from frantic new parents who have just realized they don’t know how to correctly install a car seat.
“Some parents don’t care. Most parents simply don’t have the time or the confidence to do the job themselves and we’re always happy to help them understand the critical elements in selecting, installing and using a car seat,” says Mohammad, a certified car seat technician and founder of Baby Car Seat Installers.
In the frenzy leading up to the birth of a baby, new parents can be excused for being scatterbrained. Regular visits to the gynecologist or midwife; pre-natal classes; building a nursery; and having enough diapers, sleepers and baby bottles for the newborn’s arrival add pressure to their regular obligations. Although critical, installing a car seat usually takes a backseat to more immediate concerns. However, overlooking this important task can have grave consequences.
“Statistics show that between 70 to 90 per cent of car seats are not used or installed correctly, which can lead to serious injuries or worse,” says Mohammad. For this reason, some nurses and hospitals sometimes prevent parents from leaving their facility out of concern for the baby’s safety.
