Had the one piece halibut and chips and the food was good, asked for side of coleslaw and an iced tea. A little shocked at getting a bill for 20.91. I think this is a bit pricey for not even getting a beer with it. Coleslaw $3, iced tea $3.30. Overpriced. Won't return.
Best fish and chips in Kingston, steak and kidney pie too. I go there once a month with friends , consistent quality excellent friendly service. Its always packed which says it all !!
I posted a review a couple of years ago and I've been back a few times since then.... but then made the mistake of going on a Friday a couple of weeks back. I expected it would be busy but there was no line-up so all seemed well..... service, though, was quite slow at each stage - but not really a problem, it's busy right? However, the dinner itself (a pretty standard fish and chips that must have been what at least half the customers were after) seemed to take about ten minutes too long. Fine, I can wait, it's busy, no problem. But when I got the meal it was clear that the chips had been siting on the plate for ten minutes, possibly longer, while the fish was cooked. Please.... don't put things on the plate if it's not all ready at the same time - chips do not like to sit anywhere cooling off. Fish was ok, if small, and the teapot was a joke. The place needs a bit more hands-on management, not just having the owners sitting chatting with the customers, which is nice, but some control needs to be exercised in the kitchen to have a good flow of cooking and how the food is served. If it's not done properly then it's over-priced. (I also went for a 'take-out' Fish and Chips a few months ago and it was clear that not one ingredient was 'ready to go' - Fish and Chips is 'fast food' - or it's meant to be. I waited 20 minutes for a 'standard' F&S - never again). Still a good place (except Fridays) but needs more control of the kitchen.
They have the yummiest rice pudding in the Rose and Crown on Princess. My Keiths's is always fresh and ice cold when I stop by and the chicken fingers are tasty but a bit pricey. The fries here are awesome! The place can be very busy on Friday so be ready to ait 15 minutes for a table. Apparently their fish is excellent, but I hate fish in general so I cannot comment. They have a tiny British food store located right off the dining room and they offer a variety of British candy and canned goods and traditional fare in jars. I like the Yorkie bars without rasins, believe me, they are gooooood. They have ice cream machine as well and it lured families with small children. All in all a good experience, the service can lag a bit but it doesn't bother me at all. As for atmosphere, I can offer upa few valid suggestions. They should play some traditional British music over the p.a instead of the local top ten hits radio station. There is nothing tackier than top ten music, but I digress. They sould dim the lights a bbit lower at night and possibly have some live music like a fiddle player playing trad music. They should also put tea lights on ever other table to soften it up. They do not have the traditional bartop of oak and brass. Anyways, cute place overall with decent service and good food, decent beer selection and reasonable prices.
Whenever I come from Ottawa we go here for fish and chips. I have never been disappointed. The fish is always perfectly done and the chips plentiful and crispy. The salad and coleslaw are above average as well. The pop is expensive-$3 i think but refills are free. The waitress we always seem to get at lunch hour is attentive and friendly. We do like the pilot house as well but the place gets very crowded and the seating is tight plus almost impossible to park down town.
We've been here a couple of times for fish and chips and were pleased with the meal. Oddly enough, coleslaw is additional cost but I guess it means less waste if some people don't eat it. Not a very big restaurant but apparently popular based on how full it was the last time we were there. Service was adequate but not memorable.
We were impressed by the reviews on this site, so when we were invited to suggest a spot for dinner, we brought a British ex-pat and a British visitor to the Rose and Crown. We left slightly disappointed, although it was an acceptable meal. My fish and chips (standard cod version) was very good, although the chips were a little under done. Personal preference would have them a little more crispy. The fish was very good though, with a light crispy batter. My wife had the "Chicken Wellington", and although she enjoyed it, it was NOT Chicken Wellington...it was chicken pot pie. The food was okay, it just wasn't great as some here have professed it to be. We asked about the trifle dessert, but they use canned whipped cream instead of the real stuff so we declined. Oh, and they use canned peas too...would have preferred frozen. Like I said...not bad, just not as good as some have said.
If you like real fish and chips, UK style, this is the place to be. The 'regular' size is plenty big enough and the large size.... well, it's huge. Always friendly and fast service. Food tastes perfick. I suppose if I had one gripe it would be that the tea bags used are the tasteless US/Canada variety - please get some quality teabags or I'm bringing my own in future! There's also a great little shop there which sells all kinds of UK favourites.
We had a great time and the fool was excellent. The new section works well too.
The servers here were absolutely wonderful. Service was prompt and very pleasant. The chips and garlic bread were delicious, but I didn't like my chicken wellington. I've never had it before, so it may just be that I don't like chicken wellington, not necessarily that the quality wasn't any good. I don't know. Very good place though and will definitely be back!
Visited Canada for my firs time in the Summer all the way from the north west of england were fish and chips are our friday chippy tea! The hamburger and chips are amazing and thats all i kept ordering, i never had chicken caesar salad before tried it here and i still have yet to buy one that'll beat how good it was here!
