Filled With Neglect…Strait Chillin…The Root of all Evil. The puzzling menu items scrawled on the oversized chalkboard at The Mackenzie Room are a lot less straightforward than your typical bill of fare, and that’s all part of the fun. “Leaving the names a little a bit vague keeps the mystique until the dish arrives,” explains chef Sean Reeve. “What you read isn’t necessarily what you’re going to get.”
Pushing the envelope comes naturally to the talented chef, who takes a thoughtful approach to his roster of seasonal West Coast cuisine. “There are always two things I try and do with my cooking,” he explains. “I want to invoke a memory using flavours that take you back to a certain time in your life. Alternatively, I try to create a dish that makes you think – something that throws you for a loop and is a little bit exciting.”
It’s this unique experiential nature that sets The Mackenzie Room apart from many of the old standbys on the Vancouver dining scene. From its edgy locale on the Downtown Eastside to the enigmatic dishes and boozy punchbowl cocktails, the cozy dining room offers the perfect blend of surprise and familiarity.

Hands down favourite restaurant in Vancouver.
You must try their tasting menu of everything! Min. 4 people to order. Fresh, creative, complicated, delicious dishes to take you on a food experience. Excellent engaging service. Casual relaxed atmosphere in the railtown part of town where some very interesting restaurants are popping up here and there. Street parking is very accessible and they are located on the north side of Oppenheimer park.

An unexpected gem on a somewhat-seedy strip in Railtown, The Mackenzie Room will surprise and delight, while making you feel right at home. Boozy punch bowls and shabby-chic furnishings give the restaurant a best-friend’s-dinner-party vibe, but chef Sean Reeve’s masterful cooking is anything but ordinary. Check out the chalkboard menu for the daily farm-to-table dishes on offer – although it might require some deciphering. With tongue-in-cheek names like Louisiana Tim Bits and Boar’n Supremacy, elevated dishes are as fun to order as they are to eat. Dining with a group? Ask for the multi-course tasting menu – you won’t regret it.
View this Smart ListI love this farmhouse-style restaurant on Powell; it’s relatively new and has quickly become one of my favourite spots in Strathcona. It’s got a great vibe and the wait staff are fantastic – I leave with new friends every time I visit. Everything is high quality and you can tell they really put thought into their ingredients. The chalkboard menu can sound a bit precious, but all of the items come out in super large portions and I always leave feeling stuffed. I love the garden vegetables and a dish called The Showstopper, which features legumes, farmer’s cheese and pistachios.
