Meet the owner

“What really made us want to open a restaurant is that Tamam is a brilliant cook,” says Sobhi Zobaidi of his wife, Tamam, who is also the namesake of the restaurant that the two own together.

Tamam (the restaurant) opened in 2012, and is an easy-to-miss hole-in-the wall on East Hastings Street, boasting the only authentic Palestinian cuisine in Vancouver. Tamam and Sobhi are both from Palestine where Tamam’s father was a professional chef. “A good one, too!” laughs Tamam.

“Everyday I discover how talented Tamam is and how she can transform any combination of ingredients into something that’s really wonderful,” says Sobhi.

Though Tamam grew up around good cooking and is inspired by her father, she learned the tricks of the trade herself.

“I encouraged her a lot,” Sobhi pauses and then laughs, “because I love to eat.”

I tried the lamb stew and my husband had the slow cooked chicken. The lamb stew was extremely salty. I was up all night drinking water. It cost $22 for a bowl of the stew, served with rice and a small coleslaw. The worst stew I have ever had. My partner's slow roasted chicken was a whole drumstick, served with a small coleslaw and cabbage roll. The chicken was a little dry, but otherwise ok. The wait time is extremely slow. Service is extremely slow. Our entree took about 45 minut

    Palestinian restaurant, authentic cuisine, lovely

Tamam is the name of the owner, the cook and the restaurant. The owner and cook -- together with her filmmaker husband -- came to Vancouver from the Old City of Jerusalem and cooks with all the freshness and flavour of that most remarkable place. The menu is as authentic as they come. The signature dish is mujaddarah, savory rice and lentils softly blended with crispy fried onions on top. I recommend Tamam to everyone looking for an authentic Palestinian gustatory experience.

Restaurants serving a taste of the Middle East in Vancouver

Combining Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours, Tamam is presenting its own distinct cuisine that's inspired by Palestinian food. The menu here draws from both the fresh flavours of the sea and the deep and rich spices of the land, faithfully recreating dishes for anyone curious to experience one of the only Palestinian restaurants in Vancouver. Stop in and try the sambusec, cabbage rolls or their traditional couscous.
