If there’s one thing Olivia Hua can’t stand, it’s stagnation. “I was in a job where repetition kept occurring, and it was getting a little draining,” she says. So Olivia chose a new path by taking over Cake Couture, where she had worked with the prior owner and fallen in love with cake decorating. “It harkened back to a lot of my interests as a teen or child: being able to create something like art – that you can eat!” she recounts.
Creating cakes feeds Olivia’s creative drive. When describing her day, she'll first list the regular procedures: “Check the temperatures in the fridge, talk with the employees, map out the day.” But then there's an audible lift in her voice when she finishes with, “And then you get to start decorating!”
With a focus on premium products and creative experimentation, Cake Couture has made its mark as an innovative bakery. “We did a volcano cake,” Olivia beams. The cake was for a Japanese/Vietnamese restaurant and featured noodles and sushi in place of the lava. “Every week, there are new orders. And everyone has a different story to tell with their cake.”
