Malcolm Saunders’ entrepreneurial journey of food and nutrition started in his basement. He set up a kitchen and store in the basement of his house, where he would teach chocolate making classes and sell unique herbs, superfoods and other nutritious natural foods. “Word of mouth was inhibited by the fact that people were told to go to this dude’s basement,” says Malcolm. “It was fun in the beginning but we decided to make the jump into a retail location.” That’s when The Light Cellar opened its doors.
Much like the foods and products inside the store, The Light Cellar grew organically. It expanded and added more cooking classes, more bulk foods, more products and eventually Canada’s first Elixir Bar. “We have a great sense of community with ourselves and our customers. We focus on providing a warm, friendly environment. We focus on customer service and education and making that connection with whoever walks through the door.”
