“I moved here from Venezuela to pursue opportunities in Alberta’s oil and gas industry,”
Maria Alejandra Medina says. “With my background in mechanical engineering, I thought I could continue with something that I am passionate about. Regardless of the great opportunities, after four years I found I needed a career change.”
Maria discovered the increased popularity of custom cakes through the Food Network. After examining her talents and interests, she realized cakes were just the fulfilling career move she craved. “I decided to embark on an entrepreneurial journey to find passion and fulfilment in my work,” Maria says. “I graduated from Bonnie Gordon College in Toronto in 2011 then I came back to Calgary and started Cakes in Vogue. I especially wanted to do this in Alberta because I know this province is not just about oil and gas. There are so many beautiful things and people here and I wanted to be a part of that.”
